NAIチーフエディターより皆様に向けての言葉
日本人にとって自然な英文作成は大変難しい作業です。エヌ・エイ・アイのチーフ校閲者（エディターコード：DAF）よりお客様へ英文校閲・校正はどういったものか、その本質と英文校閲・校正に関するメッセージです。
私はチーフエディターとして、エヌ・エイ・アイの英文校正・校閲サービスに貢献し、皆さまのお役にたてることを光栄に思います。
私は常日頃、お預かりする原稿は自身のもの、または親しい研究者たちが行ってきたものの様に、大切に扱うことを心がけ、英文校正・校閲をさせていただいております。
論文とは、長い年月をかけて行われた研究・実験の極わずかな成果物のひとつではあるものの、雑誌などを通し人々の目に触れるまでには、多大な努力と工夫を要します。
英文の組み立ての良し悪し、情報と説明の正確さなどが論文の審査において大きく影響してくる為、しっかりと吟味することを軽んじ、単に英文を校正するだけではなかなか査読者の期待に応えるレベルには達しないのが現状です。
論文を書き上げることは、多くの情報をまとめる力のみならず、英語の語学力が必要とされますので、英語を母国語としない医師や、その他科学研究者が英語で論文を書き上げることは、大きな挑戦です。
英語にはひとつの単語に複数の意味を持つものや、ほんのわずかなスペルミスが全く異なる意味を示すことがあるなど、英語を母国語とする人間であっても容易に見逃してしまいがちな問題が多数隠れています。校閲者はこのような状況を肝に銘じ、お預かりした原稿に最善の英文校閲を行う必要があると私は思っています。
お預かりした英文の中で用いられる言葉ひとつひとつの意味、全体を通して筋が通っているか、図表と一致した見解になっているかなど、著者の意図を組み取り校閲をしていきます。
また、不明点が生じれば、関連文献も確認します。それでも確認が必要であれば、躊躇したり妥協したりすることをせず著者様である先生方と確認させていただくことが必要だと考えております。
英文法だけを直すのではなく、少しでも著者様の見解に沿うような原稿作りをこれからも心がけてまいります。
そして、これは私が決して飽きることのない挑戦だと考えております。

Statement:
It is a privilege to be a part of NAI. Each paper that I edit I treat as carefully as if it were my own work or that of a colleague in the next office or lab. I understand the tremendous work that goes into performing the work that is reported in each manuscript. The manuscript is just the final result of that work, which could take months or years.
In addition, an accurate and well-written presentation of that work can highly influence whether or not it receives a favorable review. Therefore, editing such manuscripts cannot be treated lightly.
Editing documents prepared by physicians, scientists, and other professionals whose first language is not English presents a special challenge. English is a difficult language in that one word can have several meanings. Small differences in spelling can make big differences in meaning. An editor must realize that an author may not be aware of the drawbacks of the English language. In addition, each sentence must be examined carefully to be sure that it accurately expresses the author’s thoughts and that the information is in agreement with tables and figures that are provided. If I am not sure of the meaning of a statement I check sources in the literature for further information. If not, I do not hesitate to ask the author to explain further. Therefore, editing such papers is more than just correcting grammar but presenting a manuscript that accurately explains an author’s work. It is a challenge of which I never tire.
